Project background:
Sustainable Integrated Land Management Solutions (SILMS) is a market-based approach project that aims to increase incomes for smallholder farmers through adoption of the sustainable land management practices that incorporate Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM), Agroforestry and Deforestation-free Supply Chains. Conceptually, the project combines climate change mitigation with agricultural adaption strategies and is based on in-depth understanding of the dynamics that have prevented a wider uptake of sustainable land management practices by smallholder farmers in Zambia.
Small holder farmers in the project are incentivized through increased income that comes from improved market access and use of sustainable production practices increasing yields. Enabling increased production requires the development of local market systems that enhance availability of ISFM technology and modern farm inputs; increased access to commercial agroforestry and improved seed multiplication enterprises; increased availability of extension services through market-oriented agro dealerships; and increased access to crucial services such as finance and soil testing. In addition the project will also pilot SNV’s Deforestation Free Supply Chain approach in the cotton landscape to mitigate further deforestation and degradation in Eastern province.
Job Purpose
Main Tasks and Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for all extension activities on the project.
  • Take up the liaison roles with government extension workers and other stakeholders on all the project activities in operational agricultural camps.
  • Promote interventions that enhance uptake of sustainable integrated land management practices amongst smallholder farmers in the district.
  • Mobilize and coordinate trainings in operational agricultural camps.
  • Attend and represent SNV at district stakeholders meetings
  • Conduct hands on trainings of the promoted technologies under project
  • Carry out data collection and M&E activities in operational agriculture camp
Specific activities include the following:
  • Coach and mentor the trained Agro dealers, the seed multipliers, and Tree nursery entrepreneurs as effective and efficient service providers to farmers.
  • Identify and recruit farmers and organize them into producer groups
  • Training the farmers and promoting the growing of the values chains promoted by the project
  • Sensitizing the communities on the benefits of adopting ISFM and Agroforestry practices
  • Compiling and submitting reports to on time and in the required format.
  • Work closely with SCCI on the Seed multiplication initiative to ensure that Seed multipliers adhere to the requirement for them to get seed certification.
  • Organize cross-site learning among farmers and the general community on sustainable agriculture practices and agroforestry
  • Raise awareness of agriculture services promoted by the project
  • Provide technical support for soil testing to agro dealers and verification/monitoring the access to subsidies.
  • Attend and contribute to coordination meetings at district, and provincial level on behalf of the project.
  • Collect monitoring data with government extension officers in a collaborative and systematic way
  • Facilitate joint technical monitoring and reporting of the SILMS project for effective implementation and quality control.
  • Write and timely submit monthly reports for improved technical project decision making.
  • Participate in the review of technical program interventions for improved quality of SILMS project

Academic & professional qualifications, Knowledge and Experience: (Education & Related Experience)
  • Diploma in Agricultural Sciences, Natural Resource Management, Agroforestry, Agribusiness with minimum 3 years’ experience in relevant field
  • Must have Strong technical skills with practical experience in integrated Soil fertility management(ISFM),Climate Smart Agriculture and Conservation Agriculture
  • Computer literate in Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Must have excellent project management, community engagement, mobilization, facilitating and donor engagement skills
  • Must have Strong technical skills with practical experience in climate smart agriculture.
  • Communications, interpersonal, analytical, conflict management, negotiation, and networking skills are highly desired
  • Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Capacity to function well in a team and contribute effectively to team efforts.
  • Experience in implementation, monitoring and report writing is essential
Working environment: This is a field office position to be based in the Districts (Katete and Lundazi), with intermittent travel to Lusaka. The applicant is to have a valid driving license and MUST be able to ride a motor bike.
