Purpose of the Assignment

To provide visual documentation of key UNICEF Zambia activities and events in October-November 2017 in order to produce communication and advocacy materials for use across various UNICEF platforms.

Assignment Tasks

Under the guidance of the Chief of Communication, the photographer will work closely with section colleagues, particularly the Communication team to perform the following tasks:

  • To provide digital photographs of UNICEF Zambia programmes and events for use in promotional websites, publications, social media platforms and campaigns.
  • The photos should be of high quality and resolution so that they can be used for various purposes including on billboards if needed.
  • Expected Deliverables

    The Photographer will be expected to deliver any of the following as required at a specific period:

  • For every special event photographed, on the same day, a minimum of 25 colour and/or b/w (as required) digital images in high resolution shot as a RAW file (300 pixels/inch: minimum size 3000 x 2000 pixels;) and the same selection in lower resolution (1000 pixels longer edge, JPEG format) will be delivered to UNICEF.
  • Within five days of shooting for the purposes of providing photos for publications, promotional materials, website or campaigns, a complete set of images (min 100 per day) shot as a RAW file (300 pixels/inch: minimum size 3000 x 2000 pixels), saved chronologically. In addition, an edited set of 25 colour or B/W as needed, in high resolution with full captions; and a full set in lower resolution will be delivered to UNICEF.
  • All digital photographs must contain complete caption information in “file info” and separate word format captions list. Caption information should consist of: date, place, subject names and age, and brief description of the situation photographed.
  • The sets of digital images will be delivered on CDs and/or DVDs together with caption information and one set will be emailed via dropbox or WeTransfer.
  • Photography subject release forms signed by parents or legal guardians of children under the age of 18 will be delivered to UNICEF Malawi Office together with the images.
  • All photos should contain photo credit and full captions (as per attached guideline) and should be able to be used by UNICEF free of rights.
  • UNICEF and the photographer will share copyright of all the photographs produced under this contract, with photographer granting to UNICEF non-exclusive world rights in perpetuity to all images.
  • Other Areas to be considered

    The consultant is expected to maintain at all times demeanor and behavior consistent with highest journalistic ethical standards aligned with UNICEF principles of working with children. The photographers may be required to work closely with a writer and/or UNICEF staff. UNICEF uses images for a variety of purposes, requiring that digital images be of sufficient quality – resolution – to ensure quality print, as well as web, reproduction. This requires image files that, when opened, are usually displayed at three or four times the size of a 17” monitor. At the same time, large image files must be compressed to transmit efficiently.

    Payment Arrangements

  • Fees will be paid per output as per the agreed rates.
  • Fees will be paid in Zambian Kwacha, on submission of an invoice and acceptance of delivered services.
  • Photographer will be expected to work from home, with occasional meetings in UNICEF office in Lusaka.
  • Photographer will be expected to supply all photographic equipment and cover related communication costs (Internet access/email)
  • For project site visits, UNICEF Zambia will cover in-country transportation and DSA as per standard UN rules and rates.
  • The Photographer will be required to sign the necessary Health statements for consultant/individual contractors prior to taking up the assignments and to document that they have appropriate health insurance.
  • In the event of non-satisfactory images provided, UNICEF shall withhold payment.

    Qualifications of Successful Candidate

    Education

  • University degree or diploma equivalent qualification in photography or specialized training courses complemented by professional experience.
  • Years of relevant experience

  • 5 -7 years’ proven work experience in Photography, including coverage of public events and development projects.
  • Additional Knowledge Required

  • Familiarity with UNICEF programmes and development issues.
  • High level of creativity and initiative
  • Previous experience in taking photos of children for similar purposes or cooperation with UNICEF is considered an advantage
  • Work experience with UNICEF or other UN agency is an asset.
  • Strong communication skills with fluency in written and spoken English and preferably a Zambian language.
  • Ability to work with different teams, and deliver to deadlines.
  • Good written and communication skills.
  • Good computer knowledge.
